Future-Focused Strategies
with the Creative Power of Future Design

During a Future Design session, participants view current decisions and challenges from the perspective of future generations. The goal is to make choices that are sustainable and reflect the interests of those future generations. This is achieved by explicitly asking participants to ‘take on the role’ of future generations, allowing them to look at the present from a future-oriented perspective.

Future Design was developed by Professor Tatsuyoshi Saijo from Japan and is now successfully applied worldwide. By thinking from the perspective of the future, participants focus on goals and solutions that have an impact across generations. This future-oriented approach fosters creative thinking, as participants are encouraged to break free from conventional constraints and short-term perspectives.
The combination of World Café and Future Design is exceptionally powerful, promoting a collective approach to problem-solving. World Café enables the organic development of knowledge and insights through continuous perspective shifts. Future Design connects these insights to the interests of future generations, fostering deep engagement and collective awareness of the long-term consequences of decisions.

APPROACH TO FUTURE DESIGN SESSION

A Future Design session always begins with an in-depth conversation with our client to clarify the challenges and goals. Based on this, we create a tailored proposal. A session lasts at least half a day, but ideally, we spend a full day—or even engage in a development trajectory—traveling through time with the participants.

During the session, the facilitator guides you on a journey to the future—10, 20, 30, or even 40 years ahead. In this future, we experience the world as it might look then. From this perspective, we look back at the present: what do we see when we view our current time from the future? What advice, warnings, or compliments might we offer from that future world? This approach inspires participants to make different choices that impact both the present and the future. As Roman Krznaric states in his book The Good Ancestor: The children of your children will thank you.’
