NTC Regional European Conference (Geneva):
Inspiration session “Anders kijken!”

November 10 and 11, 2018

REQUEST

“NTC de Taalfontein” in Geneva, together with NOB and Novella, are organizing a special 24-hour inspirational session for teachers who teach Dutch and who are active at schools in Europe. The aim is for participants to share their own ideas and experiences and to learn from each other, to learn more about how our brain really works and how they can use this knowledge in their collaboration with colleagues, students, parents and certainly also for themselves.

IMPLEMENTATION

The two-day inspirational session took place at the International School in Geneva. Paul Smit took us into the world of how the human brain works and showed us how we can have a different view of ourselves, our colleagues, our pupils and their parents. On day 1 everyone wrote and drew fanatically on the tablecloths and the most wonderful conversations emerged about talent development, working in an international environment and changing from a transferer of knowledge to a coach.

THEMES

The second day is more about influencing. In what way do you have influence on pupils, parents or colleagues? And what is the effect of this influence on the education and the daily work? The small groups each make short videos on how they could perceive education in 2020. At the end of the 24-hour session a joint retrospective session is held and all participants receive a certificate from the NOB. All the photo’s, videos and the final report, all made by Novella, can be found on the website.

Regional Conference – Themes:

The World Cafe provided the desired interaction between the teachers based on a variety of themes. There was a lot of talk about motivating pupils by giving them more autonomy and more freedom in making their own choices. Ideas were exchanged on how to create more room for creativity/individual development of pupils and how this now fits in with the CITO tests. The use of cooperative working methods for talent development was discussed a lot. Furthermore, the question on what is the best way to involve parents in the lessons was asked. And how can you yourself develop as coach; who can coach you?

It is obvious that a further, deeper dive into these topics at a next Regional Conference is planned.

As a school manager I have experienced this weekend as extremely positive and valuable. The collaboration between everyone was fantastic. The connection between all those present provided this conference with a golden frame. I have received many positive reactions. The added value of this multi-day event has made us better teachers! The rating given to this session by the participants: 9!
