Royal Airforce: Careers Event 2018
Looking at career dossiers with a different view

15 March 2018

REQUEST

The Careers Event 2018 has been set up in order to further map out career files/dossiers. Career files/dossiers are of importance to employees as they provides insighst on talent, qualities and ambitions. The event is meant to be informative, but foremost it is meant to inspire participants and to set them in motion. Rick Koster ensures an inspiring start to the day and is the moderator of the World Cafe which is held at the unique Park Vliegbasis Soesterberg.

IMPLEMENTATION

18 Tables are set up in between the F16s and the helicopters. A lot of involvement by all is felt at the round tables, everyone has their head bent forwards in animated conversations. Throughout the buzz there are also smiles on people’s faces, even when a critical word is said. The many ideas are written and drawn on the tablecloths and it’s pretty hard to stop the session once time is up; good to see that a meaningful conversation is much appreciated.

THEMES

During the World Cafe participants form a dialogue with each other in order to create a better match between the way the organization is developing and the way in which people are developing. This is an important basis for the initiation of the changes of the organization and personnel management. During the conversations these topics are discussed: career development, organizational development, happiness at work.

The Career Event 2018, in short:

Max Droste, Commodore, said: “In the Royal Airforce it’s not only about aeroplanes, weapons or radars, but about people”. The Careers Event 2018 was, therefore, about people. People who can continuously develop and, if and when needed, can move into other functions. Career files/dossiers are especially important for this. The successful day consisted of an introduction by Max Droste, a keynote speech by Rick Koster, dialogues in the World Cafe, networking during lunch and gaming days with career counselors and career elders.

It’s about recurring well-known themes within the organization, something that we struggle with within the organization. We need to find a way in which we can come to an agreement and then stick to our agreement. The most important piece of advice is: keep on searching for the challenges in your job, find out what gives you energy and what gives you your pleasure at work.
