Water Board Limburg, the Netherlands:
Three Mirror Sessions with administrators in Changing Times:
Looking differently! – Wanting differently! – Doing differently!

2021 and 2022

REQUEST

The rapidly changing times and their effects on water management and water safety were the reason to organize the so-called Mirror Sessions for the Limburg Water Board in 2021 and 2022. In these sessions, the members of the General Board, in the presence of, among others, the management of WL and WBL, informally exchanged ideas on three questions: ‘What kind of water board do we want to be?’ ‘What does this require of our board?’ and ‘What support does the AB need for this?’
An inspiration document will be compiled from the harvest of the three sessions in the autumn of 2022, which will be offered to the General Board for reflection via the Executive Board. This document will serve as inspiration for the next board, for agreements to be made at the start of the next administrative period.

EXECUTION

Novella – theworldcafe.nl and Water Board Limburg (the Netherlands) jointly designed the programme for the three Mirror Sessions, which were fully in line with the question. In this way, external moderators and speakers were also selected, briefed and recorded. The World Café methodology was used in all sessions. The good conversation at the tables with ever-changing participants was well received by the participants and was experienced as very useful.

THEMES

The first session focused on the question ‘What kind of water board do we want to be?’ Moderator was Kjell Lutz; as an external speaker, Peter van Rooy managed to stimulate the administrators with his contribution. The second session was about the question ‘What does this require of our board?’ Vera Dalm moderated this session with external speaker Paul Smit, who zoomed in with the necessary hilarity on human behavior and how our brain works when it comes to change. The third mirror session was again chaired by Vera Dam. The theme was ‘What support does the General Board need?’ Huri Sahin was present online with a contribution about what support is already available for administrators. Daan Quakernaat ended the session with a dynamic story about building cathedrals and the same passion and innovative power that is needed for water safety.

We definitely look back on successful meetings. Partly thanks to the pleasant manner and the right focus with which the chair guided us through the sessions. Thanks for that! I also understand from colleagues that they had nice conversations and that it also provided great insights into the collaboration with the board.
